Psychiatric Care
Medication management and psychiatric consultation, integrated with the therapy work, because for some people the two together work better than either alone.
Clinical work
What Psychiatric Care Is
Psychiatric care, sometimes called medication management or psychiatric consultation, is a branch of mental health treatment focused on the evaluation, prescribing, and ongoing management of psychiatric medications. It is most commonly used alongside therapy for moderate to severe presentations of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, trauma-related symptoms, sleep difficulties, and postpartum mood conditions, though some clients pursue psychiatric consultation on its own for evaluation or diagnostic clarification.
A psychiatric provider is trained to assess symptoms, medical history, and treatment context, then to discuss the realistic role medication can play in your care. The work is collaborative. You decide together whether to begin medication, adjust an existing regimen, or hold off entirely, and follow-up appointments allow your provider to monitor response and refine the plan over time.
At Thrive Psychological Services, our psychiatric care program serves adults across California with both in-person and telehealth visits. With your consent, our psychiatric provider coordinates with your Thrive therapist so the two parts of your care move in the same direction rather than in parallel. Most in-network insurance carriers cover medication management, and we verify your benefits before the first appointment.

Evaluation, prescribing, and coordination
Our Approach To Psychiatric Care
Our psychiatric program is built around making medication a clear, collaborative part of your overall care. Here is how that work plays out from the first appointment through ongoing management.
Medication Evaluation
A 60-minute first appointment focused on building the full clinical picture — symptoms, history, prior treatment — and discussing whether medication is the right next step for you.
Treatment Planning
Collaborative decision-making about what to start, what to hold off on, and what to monitor. Medication options walked through in plain language, with the trade-offs and timelines explained.
Ongoing Management
Regular follow-up appointments (25–30 minutes) to monitor response, adjust dosing, address side effects, and refine the plan as your body and life respond over time.
Therapist Coordination
With your consent, direct coordination with your Thrive therapist so therapy and medication move in the same direction rather than in parallel. Integrated care is part of the model here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to take medication to be in psychiatric care?
No. Psychiatric appointments are also useful for evaluation, understanding diagnoses, and deciding whether medication makes sense. Some clients meet with our psychiatric provider and decide therapy alone is the right path. That’s a valid outcome.
Is medication management covered by insurance?
For most of our in-network insurance carriers, yes. Coverage varies by plan, so we will verify your benefits before your first appointment. In some cases, your insurance may require seeing a specific in-network prescriber, in which case we will help coordinate a referral.
Can I see a Thrive psychiatric provider AND a Thrive therapist at the same time?
Yes; in fact, that is one of the strengths of our model. With your consent, your therapist and psychiatric provider can coordinate so your treatment moves coherently. Many clients find this integrated care more effective than two separate practices.
What if I need a medication that requires a specialist?
For some heavier-control medications or specialized presentations, a referral to an outside prescriber is the right call. We are upfront about this. We will help you find an appropriate prescriber and stay coordinated with your therapy if you are working with us in parallel.
